Climate

The central southern Aegean area has predominantly northerly winds - the ‘meltemi’. Periods of strong wind start during June, blow often in July and August, and become less frequent during September. Typical maximum strengths are F7, and they may blow for some 4 days at a time. The Eastern Peloponese north of Monemvassia is little affected; far from it, regular southerly afternoon sea breezes blow into the gulf of Navplion most afternoons. The Saronic gulf has predominantly light winds all season. Samos and the Dodecanese are a great cruising ground. Northerly winds, lighter and more sheltered than the Cyclades, make it easier if you need to work northwards. Excellent for cruising Samos to Kos / Rhodes on a following wind (one way charters available).
